New Year, New Career?

thinking about leaving your job?

how to know when you should find a new job

New year, new goals? New years and new starts inspire reflection and the urge to purge the old and start fresh. Find my 2022 Goals Template in my #Goals IG Story.  First, show of hands ✋ if this time of year gets you thinking about where you are + where you want to be? Are you thinking about leaving your job?

🙋🏻‍♀️ Me! So, for many years of my career, I remember wondering, what is it that I really want to do? Am I where I should be? As a working mom, should I be staying home and not working? Am I really fulfilled? Am I settling? I played these types of questions on repeat in my mind for days, especially when my kids were younger.

What would follow was searching for hours on end for my dream job on LinkedIn or on companies’ I admired websites. After, I’d even submit my resume or talk to recruiters for jobs my heart was only half in but it was something different and I’d rationalize all sorts of things with myself. Sound familiar?

If so, I’m here to tell you, that this is NORMAL and HEALTHY. It’s ok to call a self-timeout to take a step back if you’re thinking about leaving your job. Here’s a list of questions to can ask yourself to help you decide if you should hit the {resume} submit button and ✌🏼 out or if you just need a dose of inspiration to make some changes on your current path.

Career/Employee fit, in my experience, is determined by:

  • Culture and Value alignment
  • Leadership x Employee compatibility
  • Sense of Purpose and Feeling Valued
  • Trust and Respect between you and your team members
  • Opportunity to Learn and Grow Professionally

If you answer “No” to 6 or more of the 10 following questions, it’s a sign that you should consider moving on and take a deeper dive and research why your instincts are telling you to move on. So answer these questions if you’re thinking about leaving your job.

  1. Do you have any values in common with your employer?
  2. Do you trust your direct boss? Do you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and ideas even if they conflict with theirs?
  3. Do your teammates thank you?
  4. Are you learning new things in your role?
  5. Do you get inspiration from anyone or any projects in/at your company?
  6. Do the managers and leaders in your organization lead by example?
  7. Is your company in good financial health?
  8. Are you proud to talk about your job or work?
  9. Can you say that your co-workers do not talk about you behind your back?
  10. Are you passionate about what you do or what your company does?

No matter what your responses are, remember, you are unstoppable 🙂 when you put your mind to it and you go ALL IN. Wherever you are in your journey and wherever you’re heading (to work or maybe retiring to stay home) I hope you find what you’re looking for.
